Carmen José is an illustrator, educator, and organizer who holds a Master of Fine Arts in Visual Communication from KH Kassel and has taught at the Willem de Kooning Academy. Her multifaceted practice spans freelance illustration for social practice and poetry publications alongside co-founding initiatives like the Rotterdam Illustration Festival. For this exhibition, she proposes an installation and mural concept featuring original works and large-scale prints from her book “I Don’t Know How to Draw a Tree”, published by Rotopol. Through a thoughtful blend of poems, watercolor paintings, and line art, the project takes viewers on an artistic walk in the woods while questioning conventional creative pedagogy and how we learn to represent nature. Ultimately, her work serves as an invitation to rediscover intuitive creativity beyond self-imposed demands, celebrating the joy of the creative process and the delight of encountering the world with an open mind.
