Cristóbal Schmal (1977) is a Chilean visual artist based in Germany. He works illustrating books and comics, and has also illustrated hundreds of articles for magazines and newspapers over the years, such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, and National Geographic. In his work, Cristóbal often combines his distinctive visual style based on strong stylization and playful combinations of materials and techniques such as painting, collage, and cut-out, with nonfiction content, making his projects really outstanding from mainstream production. Among his most notable books is Life (As We Know It) (2025, Ziggy Hanaor), an acclaimed illustrated nonfiction book exploring the origins and evolution of life on Earth. He is currently working on his next comic, Spiritism, which is scheduled to be published in 2027. His favorite place is the sea, right where the waves break.
