Maria Giulia Chistolini is a multidisciplinary artist based in Austria whose work focuses primarily on illustration, comics, and animation. In both her personal and commercial work—which includes collaborations with clients such as Sony Music and Cosmopolitan—she balances existential themes with a playful approach, through which she explores humor, overconsumption, digital culture, and mental health. Her current exhibition offers a glimpse behind the scenes of her creative process, focusing on the very process of a work of art’s creation—all the chaotic, playful, and frustrating steps that precede the final illustration. The foundation of this project is her personal challenge, in which she has been sketching small drawings every day since the beginning of the year, some of which have unexpectedly developed into full-fledged posters or comics. The exhibition offers visitors a glimpse behind the scenes of creativity, which often does not arise from a sudden flash of inspiration but is born gradually from small, seemingly ordinary lines on paper. The exhibition, which is a new and expanded version of the artist’s previous project presented in Italy, displays the final works in close proximity to their original sketches and complements them with her original year-long sketchbook. Through this concept, the artist celebrates curiosity and experimentation while openly inviting viewers to create, experiment, and play themselves.
