LUSTR 4 - Lustr

LUSTR 4 – festival of illustration

22.–28. September 2017

Kampus Hybernská, Prague 1

The fourth annual LUSTR illustration festival took place from September 22 to 28, 2017, in Prague, at Hybernská 4, and once again confirmed its position as the largest gathering of contemporary illustrators in the Czech Republic. The festival presented the work of forty selected artists and showcased the diversity of contemporary illustration in the context of the Czech, Slovak, and international scenes.

LUSTR focuses on original illustration and provides a space for both established and emerging artists. Each of the 40 exhibiting artists prepared their own installation designed specifically for the festival space, making the exhibition a lively visual whole full of diverse approaches and distinctive artistic styles. The festival was visited by more than 2,000 visitors, who had the opportunity to personally meet the faces and hands of artists they often know only from their book or digital work.

Contemporary illustration today transcends the traditional medium of books—it appears in magazines, digital communications, advertising, animation, and product design. LUSTR aims to present this diversity to the public and enable visitors to discover new artists and current trends. The only restriction for exhibitors is that they must present their own original work, unencumbered by commercial commissions.

The fourth year placed great emphasis on sharing professional experiences and presenting current trends in illustration and related fields. The program included a series of workshops, lectures, and limited master classes. A new feature was LUSTR talks—hour-long open presentations in which professionals shared their work, sources of inspiration, successes, and failures in their careers.

Another new feature was the illustrator pecha kucha, focused on introducing the exhibitors and providing an overview of the current illustration scene. The program was complemented by screenings of Czech and foreign animated short films and workshops for children.

The festival also included a retrospective section, which offered visitors the opportunity to see selected works by Jiří Trnka, one of the most prominent figures in Czech illustration and animation.

Foreign guests played an important role at LUSTR:

Magoz – Spanish illustrator and animator
Martina Pauková – internationally active illustrator of Slovak origin
Jonathan Vermesch – French illustrator
