19.–24. September 2019
Kampus Hybernská, Prague 1
The sixth annual LUSTR contemporary illustration festival took place from September 19 to 24, 2019, at the Hybernská Campus in Prague 1, once again confirming its position as the largest and most significant exhibition of original illustration in the Czech Republic. Over the course of six days, it offered visitors a unique opportunity to see the best of contemporary illustration literally under one roof.
The central theme of this year’s event was Freedom, which resonated both in the context of historical anniversaries and in the personal and social statements of the exhibiting artists. The thematic approach was not a condition for participation; illustrators related to it freely and individually.
The festival featured the largest exhibition of contemporary illustration in the Czech Republic. From nearly 300 registered authors, a professional jury selected more than 40 illustrators from Czechia and Slovakia, who were joined by foreign guests. The exhibitors included established professionals, emerging authors, and illustrators working outside the mainstream. The Hybernská Campus was filled with original installations created specifically for this event.
Among the foreign guests was the award-winning Chinese illustrator Zhu Yingchun, author of the book The Slowpoke Snail. He presented his watercolor drawings and led a workshop focused on the magic of ink painting. His participation was organized in cooperation with the Verzone publishing house.
Other guests included Berlin-based illustrators from Random Collective, who presented a group exhibition at the festival, appeared at LUSTR Talks, and organized a workshop/masterclass on character design for animation, led by Elda Brogli and Guille Comín.
Foreign participation was complemented by an exhibition of winners from the Moscow Book Illustration Festival MORS, an international platform connecting illustrators, artists, publishers, and readers.
Among Czech illustrators, the award-winning Chrudoš Valoušek accepted our invitation.
The studio brings together world-class professional illustrators and animators. Argentine illustrators and designers Elda Broglia, Florencia Sofia, Josefina Preumayr, and Marcela Bustamante; Spanish illustrator Guille Comin; British illustrator Jack Sachs; Argentine illustrator Juan Molinet; and Slovak illustrator Martina Pauková. All of the artists are connected by their stay and work in Berlin. And their friends Cachetejack and Jose Mendez.

MORS is an international festival of book illustration and visual representation of literary works. It is a creative space that brings together modern book illustrators, artists, publishers, writers, and readers.
Its representatives will bring a collection of works by last year’s winners to LUSTR, and our cooperation does not end there; Czech artists will also be presenting their work at this year’s festival in Moscow. Not only through their works, but also through workshops and lectures.
